This month we published two new translations in English, six in French and one in German. We also added a new page to the website: a dedicated page for the White Tara practice

Since this month was the anniversary of the great Patrul Rinpoche, we translated A Playful Letter Urging Dola Tulku Tsang to Request the Teachings on the Channels and Winds from Lama Rogdrama Palgeby Patrul Rinpoche. Most people know Patrul Rinpoche from the stories of his life as a vagabond, his uncompromising character and his emphasis on compassion and bodhicitta. Less well known is the fact that he was a great master of tsalung, the practices of the channels and winds, and the yogic exercises of yantra (trulkhor). Matthieu Ricard, in his monumental work on the life of Patrul Rinpoche—Enlightened Vagabond—writes: “Dodrup Tenpai Nyima said it was only the efforts of Patrul and Rogza Sönam Palge that enabled the yogic practices of the Longchen Nyingthig to be preserved and passed down to this day.”

“Patrul’s teacher Rogza Sönam Palge was a close spiritual friend of the 1st Dodrupchen, Jigme Trinley Özer and of Do Khyentse. It is said that he was able to sit in the lotus position in space; he was able to run so swiftly that he could catch up with deer and wild Tibetan asses. In his old age, Patrul used to send some of his own students to learn the tsalung yogic practices from Rogza Sönam Palge, saying that he was one of the last authentic holders of these precious instructions.”

And:

“In remote places, Patrul practiced yoga according to the Longchen Nyingthig tradition. Before doing the twenty-one exercises, he would strip naked, assume a particular yogic posture, and hold his breath, as in the great vase exercise. Holding his prana in the central channel, he eventually became able to recite the long Chanting the Names of Manjushri three times on a single held breath.”

Here we have translated a brief letter, most likely addressed to Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima (1865–1926), urging the tulku to seek instruction on the Longchen Nyingtik practice of subtle channels and wind-energies from Rogza Sönam Palge (1800–1884), whom Patrul describes as the sole remaining holder of a once vibrant lineage. The text is in heptasyllabic verse and rich in local dialect. It contains the famous lines:

"When the practices of the channels and winds
Of the Heart-Essence of the Vast Expanse flourished, they spread far and wide,
And the land was filled with cotton-clad yogis and red-robed monastics.
Yet as they declined, they all but vanished,
And apart from this old Lama [Rogza Sonam] Palge
Not a single lineage-holder remains in Tibet."

Our second text for this month is A Synopsis of the Six Dharmas of the Perfection Stage, also by Patrul Rinpoche. This text gives a short overview of the six dharmas of the perfection stage, briefly setting out the divisions and essential points of inner heat, illusory body, dream yoga, luminosity, the intermediate state, and transference.


New page for the White Tara practice of Atisha's tradition. The practice draws on three lineage streams: the long kama lineage of Atiśa's tradition, the close terma lineage of Chöjé Lingpa (1682–1720), and the extremely close lineage of Jigme Lingpa's direct visionary blessing from Tara herself. We have translated the lineage prayer and the empowerment and we are currently finalizing the main sadhana.

Sean quotes Alak Zenkar Rinpoche in saying: "It’s very important that you dedicate your life to locating and preserving rare books. We’re now at a important point in history, if we are able to serve the Dharma through protecting these books now, then there’s a hope that the Dharma will endure in the future. If we just leave it, then that hope is gone."
